Comhghairdeas

Congratulations to all our recent winners in the GAA All-Ireland Handball 40x20 Championships. Some intriguing statistics were thrown up in this years championship, to name just a few, and they include:

-       Cavan’s Paul Brady became the first player in 30 years to win 5 consecutive All-Ireland Senior singles championship titles. Pat Kirby last completed the feat in 1979 and of course the Clare legend went on to make it 6-in-a-row in 1980. Michael Walsh also appears on the ‘roll of honour’ for six consecutive years from 1986 to 1991 but that included Ducksy Walsh (1986, 1988-1991) and Roscommon’s Michael Walsh winning the title in 1987. In winning his 6th Senior Singles All-Ireland in the 40x20, Paul Brady equalled Pat Kirby’s record and is just one behind Ducksy Walsh’s seven senior singles triumphs in the small court.

-       Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann’s success in the GAA All-Ireland Senior 40x20 doubles championship was the first time the crown went to Connacht since 1985 (E Rabittee and P Delaney) and the first Mayo triumph since 1980 (P McGee and P McCormack).

-       In winning the 40x20 Minor and Senior All-Ireland doubles championships on Saturday, Mayo became the first County in 20 years to achieve that feat in the same year, the double last completed by Kilkenny in 1989.

-       An 8th All Ireland senior 40x20 singles championship win for Fiona Shannon saw her equal the record set by B Hennessy in the competition, albeit the Limerick player made it 8 in a row from 1992-1998. Shannon also made it 16 senior championship medals in the 40x20 by teaing up with sister, Sibeal, to win a 9th ladies senior doubles crown.
